The city I live in is busy, lively, and has a growing Muslim community as more and more Muslims move here seeking financial opportunities.

One day, I found myself eating breakfast at a local Muslim restaurant, and I prayed before my meal. Noticing this, the restaurant owner came to me and asked if I was a believer. I told him that I was and then asked him about his family, a natural conversation topic in most any culture. As we talked, we began discussing the fact that our two faiths share many of the same prophets, and we enjoyed discussing many of the Old Testament stories. From these Old Testament stories, I was able to get to the story of Jesus, and, thanks be to God, I was able to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with this Muslim restaurant owner, his family, and many of his employees! After that day I made a point to go back frequently and follow up with these people who the Lord had led me to share His Gospel with. Unfortunately, over time it seemed they would never accept the saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I began giving up – until the Lord used this relationship to lead me to another couple.

This young Hui couple struck me as quite different from many of the Hui I had met before; they were interested in Western music and movies and, like many other young people, spent much of their time on their phones.

I had several opportunities to talk with the husband about the Gospel, but he found the idea of God’s existence hard to believe. This I found surprising; I thought all Hui believed in Allah? I wondered what was different about this guy. As we continued talking, he eventually revealed to me that his father had a bad temper and often beat him when he was young. This really hurt his spirit and sense of self-worth, but he eventually taught himself to cope with the experience by deciding he could rely on no one but himself and that no one else would help him. He was also educated under the Chinese communist education system, so he said he believed only in things that can be confirmed by the five senses and by modern science.

I tried encouraging my friend by talking with him about God’s love and reassuring him that we have every reason to believe the Bible is reliable, that it is the book it claims to be. Yet he wanted a sign, some proof that God exists. He told me that if God helped him give up smoking, then he would believe. I told him that it is up to God to decide to help him with this, but I would still pray for him.

I followed up with him many times after this, and within several months, this Hui friend of mine prayed to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Praise God that He is faithful to save the Lost! Pray with us for persistence among believers in investing the time to teach the Hui about the saving power of Jesus Christ!
