Youtube has a few videos that provide a helpful introduction to Chinese Muslims. In this post we will highlight an episode of Rediscovering China that aired on CCTV9 called “Unveiling the Hui Life.” The whole episode can be watched at this link, or you can watch most of the episode in the embedded videos below.

This first video provides a general introduction to the Hui and Islam. The program visits NaJiaHu Mosque in Yongning as well as Tongxin Mosque. These are two of the oldest mosques in Ningxia.

During the second part of the episode, the host, Clive Murray, attends the commemoration of a Hui saint at a Gongbei or Qubbah in Tongxin county, Ningxia. Thousands of Hui Muslims are attending the commemoration. After Murray leaves the celebration, he visits the home of a Hui family to learn about Hui martial arts.

In the third part of the episode, Murray continues to learn about Hui martial arts by visiting a Hui martial arts school in Wuzhong. After touring the school and watching the students practice, Murray and his guide set out to learn about a Hui musical instrument called the kouxian (“mouth-string”) and Hui songs (if you want to watch the end of the episode that is missing, you will need to use the CCTV link).
