Current Situation:
Over 80% of the 621,500 Dongxiang people live in the province of Gansu. The majority of Dongxiang who live in Gansu reside in Dongxiang Autonomous County. Last December an earthquake shook this area of Gansu, killing 151 people. More than 15,000 houses collapsed. The government responded effectively, and quickly installed pre-constructed homes and classrooms. Due to the climate, terrain, and poverty, Dongxiang county is a difficult place to live. But Dongxiang are not ones to complain. The Dongxiang have many folk songs that talk about hope for the future, as beautiful life sprouts from the soil of oppression.
99.95% of Dongxiang are Muslim, but fewer than 0.01% of Dongxiang profess to be Christian. There are very few Scripture and Gospel resources in the Dongxiang language.
