In this year’s Ramadan 30 Days of Prayer, we are focusing on four Chinese Muslim population segments. Download the 2024 Ramadan prayer guide here. This post provides more information about the Dungan of Kyrgyzstan and lists specific prayer requests.

Current Situation:

The Dungan population (approx. 175,000) is distributed mostly among the countries of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. About 76,500 (44%) of Dungan live in Kyrgyzstan, commonly in Dungan villages. Although the Dungan represent a small minority ethnic group among the Kyrgyz majority, they both practice Islam. However, Dungan are strongly attached to their cultural identity and strict adherence to Islam. The Dungan demonstrate a unique mixture of cultures including Chinese, Hui, Russian, and Central Asian. Dungan are intentional about passing on their language, stories, traditions, and food dishes, preserving culture to the next generation.

99.9% of Dungan are Muslim, and fewer than 0.1% of Dungan profess to be Christian. There are several Gospel and Scripture resources in the Dungan language, with more every year.

  • Pray for Scripture and Gospel resources to be produced in the Dungan language and shared online
  • Pray for workers among the Dungan to have wisdom and love as they share Christ
  • Pray for outreach events to give Dungan opportunities to encounter displays of kindness and Christian witness
  • Pray for Dungan who are studying the Bible to see Jesus and believe
  • Pray for Dungan Muslims to hear the Gospel and respond.
