As a college student, Mary is struggling with identity, wanting to fit in to this new world at university with more freedom but still knowing the importance of her Hui identity. While she still doesn’t eat pork or drink alcohol, her life is beginning to look more and more like those around her. She doesn’t cover her head or stop for prayers as often as she knows she ought. But in conversation, her words make it clear that her identity is still deeply linked to being Hui.
