This is my grandson, Lele. My wife and I are raising him because his parents are in the city trying to make money for a better life. It has been about six months since Lele has seen his parents. They are not able to travel home often. Working in the city is difficult, but there are few jobs in our village.

I have lived my whole life in this village. I am a farmer. I thought my son would be a farmer, but machines are taking over farming. It is hard to make a living now. We still grow a few crops behind our home, but most of our plot of land is leased to a big farm.

Growing up we worked the fields and then during prayer times would go to the mosque. There was always at least one mosque near our fields so that we could easily ride our bikes to the mosque. Today, I still try and go to the mosque, but it is hard since I am taking care of Lele. I make sure to go every Friday at lunch time. There is a sermon about 12:30, and we pray about 1:30. This is the most important time of prayer each week.

During Ramadan I try to fast every day. It is hard to feed Lele and watch him eat but not join him. Lots of younger Hui like my son do not fast every day. They don’t understand how important it is. I am getting older. I need to do as many good works as possible, so fasting daily and praying five times a day during Ramadan is very important.

I am not sure what will happen when I die. I try and listen to the imam at the mosque and do what he says God wants. That is all I can do.

Prayer Requests

  • Pray Christ will be proclaimed in this village and in many Hui villages like it across China.
  • Pray this family will hear the Gospel and turn to follow Jesus.
  • Pray that during Ramadan Hui will see that fasting and praying does not save. Pray that they will seek truth and find Jesus.
